Experienced kayakers will love the rainy season at the Cossatot as they attempt to navigate the only Class 5 rapids in the state. During the summer, the river is at a much slower pace and offers plenty of swimming holes to cool off in.

Take a trip up the Talimena Scenic Byway to Mena’s “Castle in the Sky.” Nestled atop the second highest peak in the state, you can grab a bite to eat, ride the miniature train, hike a trail, or explore the Wonder House.

The incredible scenery and terrain of the area offer great hiking & mountain biking opportunities. Caney Creek, Athens, Big Brushy, Wolf Pen Gap, and the Ouachita National Recreation Trail are all close by. Trail maps are available at the visitor’s center.

Rivers and lakes are plentiful in the area. Whether you are looking to cast a line, take a swim, or paddle around, we’ve got you covered! The Ouachita, Cossatot, Mountain Fork, Caddo, and Little Missouri Rivers are all a just a short drive away. Check out Lake Wilhelmina or Gillham Lake for a fun day trip.

Step back in time by spending a day in downtown Mena. Many historic attractions and buildings are available to tour, and shopping and dining options are plentiful. The Downtown Arts District offers lots of fun activites sure to keep you busy.
